Decorative Paper, Impregnated Paper, TFL and HPL: A Buyer Guide

Decorative paper, impregnated paper, thermally fused laminate (TFL) and high-pressure laminate (HPL) describe different material forms or processing stages. Before comparing quotations, establish whether you are buying paper for further processing, a laminate sheet, or a surfaced board. A matching woodgrain photograph does not establish that two offers include the same product.

Four terms to separate before requesting a price

Material descriptionWhat it identifiesWhat the enquiry should clarify
Printed decorative paperA printed design carried on paper; the supply description must identify its treatment state. Is it supplied before impregnation? Who carries out the next processing step?
Resin-impregnated decorative paperDecorative paper treated with a specified resin system for subsequent processing.Which treatment, processing requirements and handling instructions apply?
TFL panelA panel with resin-impregnated decor paper fused directly to its substrate. What substrate, panel dimensions, face configuration and finish are included?
HPL sheetA laminate made from resin-treated paper layers, including a decorative surface and a kraft-paper core.Is the offer for the laminate alone or for a laminate already bonded to a board?

The distinction is supported by the manufacturing descriptions from TOPPAN and Schattdecor, and the Composite Panel Association's explanations of TFL and HPL. These references explain industry terminology; their product specifications are not Zhide specifications.

Why the words “melamine paper” need a follow-up question

A short enquiry such as “please quote melamine paper for cabinets” leaves the supplied form unclear. Ask the supplier to write out the actual material description and identify whether impregnation has already taken place. Keep that description consistent across the sample request, quotation and purchase order.

For example, a furniture maker outsourcing panel surfacing and a panel processor operating an impregnation line may start from the same design image but need different deliveries. Our purchasing recommendation is to name the next operation and the party responsible for it. That is more useful than assuming the photograph settles the supply scope.

A design reference does not define a finished board

The pictured sideboard shows how design 30294-3 can be used visually. It does not identify an actual panel core, resin formulation or production method. Keep the design selection separate from the construction and performance requirements.

When a finished panel is required, request information for that exact panel construction and intended use. For paper purchases, ask what technical information and processing trials are needed for the proposed route. Do not carry a performance claim from an unrelated HPL or TFL product into a decorative-paper order because the surfaces look alike.

Make the quotations comparable

  1. Name the material form. State printed paper, impregnated paper, laminate sheet or finished surfaced panel, and request written confirmation.

  2. Identify the design. Give the exact code and the dated physical reference to be reviewed.

  3. Define the supplied dimensions and quantity. Ask for the unit of sale, required width or sheet size and quantity basis; do not compare unlike units.

  4. Identify the finishing responsibility. Record who will impregnate, press, bond, machine and edge the material, where relevant.

  5. Keep technical questions open until answered. Request the relevant processing, packing and handling information instead of inventing requirements from a catalogue photograph.

Consider two offers for the same cabinet appearance: one may cover only a decorative-paper delivery, while the other includes a panel substrate and surfacing. Their headline prices answer different questions. Resolve that difference before deciding which offer is more economical for the intended production route.

What to send with a Zhide enquiry

Start with the decorative-paper range or our design catalogues. Send the design reference, required material form, proposed processing route, quantity and destination to Eden by email. Mark any undecided fields as questions. Available supply forms, specifications, samples and commercial terms need confirmation for the particular enquiry.

Once the material form is agreed, our repeat-order checklist can help keep the approved design and version connected to later purchases.
