SICAM 2026: Decorative Surface Sourcing After the Show

SICAM 2026 has closed in Pordenone, Italy, giving furniture-material buyers a timely reason to review their decorative-surface shortlists. For a cabinet or interior-panel programme, the useful next step is to turn inspiration into a sample brief that connects the design, intended application and finishing questions.

What the organiser reported on 23 October

The organiser's closing release, dated 23 October 2026, says the seventeenth SICAM edition ran from 20 to 23 October. Its initial figures record 698 exhibitors and visiting companies from 125 countries. The release highlights the event's role in connecting furniture components and decorative materials with future collections. These are organiser-reported results; this article is Zhide's editorial review, rather than an account of attending the fair.

The venue's event listing includes decorative papers, panels, wood and veneers among SICAM's sectors. That breadth makes the event relevant when a buyer is comparing a surface together with the furniture construction and surrounding materials.

Our sourcing takeaway: compare a material combination

A woodgrain viewed alone can create a different impression when placed beside a large pale worktop, painted door or fabric panel. Build a small comparison set around the intended furniture piece. Keep the same lighting and viewing distance, and record which sample belongs to which design reference. This makes a supplier conversation more precise than asking for a general brown or dark finish.

In the kitchen concept above, the dark cabinet fronts act as an anchor beneath a lighter surface. The useful question is whether that balance suits the buyer's own layout. The image establishes a visual direction; the pale stone and other surrounding materials are styling references and are not additional Zhide product specifications.

Keep three decisions separate

  • Design: identify the exact decorative-paper code, colour reference and grain direction.

  • Surface: discuss the intended texture and gloss with the supplier, then review a physical finished sample.

  • Panel construction: specify the required substrate and end use separately, including any performance documents the application needs.

A photograph cannot establish the complete construction of a panel. Equally, a design code does not by itself confirm an embossed finish, a board thickness or an application rating. Put each question into the enquiry so that the offer can answer it explicitly.

Use the furniture layout to judge the grain

A long sideboard and a narrow drawer front expose different parts of a woodgrain pattern. Before approving a collection, identify the visible faces, the preferred grain orientation and the position of handles, joints and open niches. Ask which sample format will let you assess those relationships. Our grain-direction and panel-layout guide develops that production discussion.

For coordinated collections, keep a main design and a small set of companion materials in one dated sample record. If a buyer changes the light surface or metal detail later, review the combination again rather than assuming that the earlier approval covers it.

Prepare a useful follow-up enquiry

Send the design reference, intended furniture item, target market and proposed quantity, together with the sample or catalogue image that prompted the enquiry. State which technical and commercial fields still need agreement. Request confirmation of current availability, sample arrangements, packing and delivery for the particular order.
